Lydia Spinelli, President, Early Steps Board of Trustees, Director, The Brick Church School

"Since its founding 30 years ago, Early Steps has placed thousands of children of color into kindergarten and first grade in independent schools in greater New York, enriching their lives and enhancing the educational experience of all the children in their schools. Young children who learn and play with peers of different skin colors, cultures, and economic resources  learn that there is nothing to fear and much to celebrate in their differences. As a result, there is a much stronger chance they will grow up without bias. Because New York City independent schools produce future leaders, Early Steps plays an important role in making our society more just and equitable."
